The nights may be getting longer, but the lights are certainly getting brighter as we head into the holiday season. Along with a plethora other ornate decorations, Christmas lights have already made their way on to homes, shops and trees this time of year. Nowhere in Canada are these lights shining brighter than at the Winter Festival of Lights in Niagara Falls.

Presented by Ontario Power Generation, the Winter Festival of Lights makes Niagara Falls and its surrounding neighbourhoods glow with a far-reaching lights display that’s open to visitors until January 31st. Now in its 36th year, the display delights over one million visitors each annually with an impressive public lights exhibition. Spectacular light arrangments illuminate 8km of the Niagara Parkway, Dufferin Islands and other tourist areas. The light display turns the city into an enchanting winter wonderland that’s enough to make even the most hardened Scrooges really get in the holiday spirit.

At the Winter Festival of Lights, you'll find lighting installations which are sometimes quirky, sometimes traditional, but always interesting to look at. The Niagara Parkway is where you will find your classic Christmas lights display, with white lights dangling from trees and Angels glowing over the Niagara Parks Police Building. At Dufferin Islands, you can view the Festival’s Canadian Wildlife display of large light figures in the shape of bears, ducks and bison. Clifton Hill is the site of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles display, where Michaelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael & Donatello lead the way to Santa’s reindeer.

Visitors can observe the park solo or join a Deck the Falls guided walking tour of the Niagra Falls tourist district. The tour includes live entertainment, photo-ops, craft activities and holiday food and beverages.

If the beautiful lights creations aren’t enough to get you out, there will also be nightly fireworks displays throughout December and January that will light up the sky above the falls.

After walking around exploring the Winter Festival of Lights, you’re going to want a convenient and cozy place to spend the night.
